Zack Snyder Is Releasing Snyder Cuts of Both Upcoming Rebel Moon Films

Must read

Zack Snyder will be releasing Snyder Cuts of each of his Rebel Moon films, his wife and co-producer Deborah Snyder said in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

Earlier this year, Snyder revealed that the script for his upcoming space epic had been split into two films. Snyder originally intended for Rebel Moon to be one movie, but Netflix squashed the notion after seeing his 172-page script. Not wanting a three-hour movie on their hands, they had him rework it into two films, and now each of those movies is getting its own Snyder Cut.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Deborah Snyder described her husband's response to Netflix's original request to cut Rebel Moon down to a leaner runtime.

“Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for…’ So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?’ ” she said

Announced back in July 2021, Rebel Moon follows a young woman who teams up with warriors from neighboring planets in an effort to save her peaceful colony from an inevitable invasion.

"Snyder Cut" entered the cultural lexicon around the time that Joss Whedon's Justice League hit theaters in November 2017. Snyder, who had directed most of the movie, had to step away earlier that same year to deal with a family tragedy. Soon after, fans kicked off a "Release the Snyder Cut" campaign that eventually resulted in Snyder's original vision (all four hours of it) hitting HBO Max in March 2021.

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes, Doona Bae, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, Jena Malone, Ray Fisher, Anthony Hopkins, Corey Stoll, and Fra Fee.

The first film will be available to stream on Netflix starting Dec. 22, 2023. The next installment will follow soon after, although no release date has been set.
