Ballerina Gets Release Date as John Wick 4 Crosses $250 Million Worldwide

Must read

Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick 4 spinoff, has a release date. Lionsgate confirmed today that the new film starring Ana de Armas will release June 7, 2024.

The spinoff will feature Armas as "an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma," who featured in John Wick 3 as a deadly ballet company, and will take place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

Director Len Wiseman is helming the project, with a cast that includes returning favorites like Winston (Ian McShane) and John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, as well as newcomer Norman Reedus. Lance Reddick, who died tragically last month, is also expected to appear in the film.

The news follows the release of John Wick 4, which has garnered critical acclaim and strong box office returns since its release at the end of March. On Monday it crossed $250 million at the global box office, though its $28.2 million over the weekend wasn't enough to beat Dungeons & Dragons.

The growing Wick-verse

Ballerina is part of a push to build up the overall Wick-verse, with a show set in the the Continental among the planned projects. Lionsgate is also considering John Wick 5, saying there's "a will and an openness." Even Donnie Yen wants to get in on the action, saying he'd be open to doing a spinoff based on Caine.

The appetite is certainly there for more John Wick, with some considering John Wick 4 the best one yet. In our review we called it a "modern epic."

"Wick’s world war is bursting at the seams with creative, thrillingly staged action choreography and cinematography, perfectly pitched performances from an outstanding and unforgettable cast of allies and villains heralded by a merciless Bill Skarsgård, all without losing its grip on the sensitivity that keeps John’s struggle for absolution at the heart of every bullet fired and every edged weapon swung," we said.

Will Ballerina be able to retain that momentum? We'll know when it releases in 2024, but John Wick hasn't missed yet.
